How Much Does It Cost to Elope in Italy? A Complete Breakdown

There is no fixed cost to elope in Italy. A simple, mostly self-planned elopement can cost well below €8,000, while €9,000–€18,000+ is a useful planning range for a professionally planned, experience-led elopement. Celebrations involving private venues, multi-day experiences, more elaborate florals or complex logistics can easily reach €18,000–€30,000+.

The biggest difference is what is actually included. An elopement in Italy can mean travelling as a couple, exchanging vows somewhere beautiful and hiring a photographer for a few hours. It can also include full planning and photography, hair and makeup, florals, a celebrant, private transport, boat hire, a private venue and several days of experiences.

This guide breaks down those costs so you can understand what different types of elopements in Italy can realistically cost, where the money goes, and which choices have the biggest impact on your overall budget.

Type of elopement experience
Realistic planning range
Simple / mostly self-planned
Under €8,000 is entirely possible
Professionally planned, experience-led
Around €9,000–€18,000+
Private venue / elaborate / multi-day
€18,000–€30,000+

These are general planning ranges, not package prices. The final cost can vary considerably depending on your destination, season, ceremony type, accommodation and the suppliers and experiences you choose.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE COST TO ELOPE IN ITALY?

There isn’t one particularly meaningful average cost for an elopement in Italy because the term can describe very different experiences.

A couple planning everything themselves, choosing a free or low-cost ceremony location and hiring only a few suppliers can spend well below €8,000. At the other end of the spectrum, a more elaborate elopement involving a private venue, several days of experiences, boats, drivers or more extensive styling can cost €18,000–€30,000+.

Rather than planning around a national “average”, it is more useful to decide what you want your experience to include and build your budget around those priorities.

ITALY ELOPEMENT COST BREAKDOWN

What Does an Italy Elopement Budget Actually Include?

Looking at the overall budget is only useful if you understand what is included in it. Two couples can both elope in Italy and spend completely different amounts depending on the experience they create.

For some couples, the main costs are simply travel, accommodation and photography. Others choose to add full planning, professional hair and makeup, florals, a celebrant, private transport, boat hire, a private ceremony location, a special dinner or several days of activities.

This is also why comparing elopement prices online can be misleading: one figure may refer only to photography, while another may include planning and suppliers, and another may represent the couple’s entire trip and experience.

Below, we’ve broken down the main costs you may want to consider when planning an elopement in Italy.

Planning an intimate wedding with guests? The costs below are for elopements rather than small destination weddings. Once you add a guest group and need a private venue, catering and additional event logistics, the budget changes considerably. You can see real examples in our Small Weddings in Italy guide .

1. Accommodation

Accommodation is one of the costs that varies most depending on where in Italy you elope, the time of year and the type of property you choose. A countryside agriturismo can cost considerably less than a luxury hotel overlooking Lake Como or the Amalfi Coast.

As a general indication, you might expect:

Tuscany agriturismi: €120–€300+ per night
Amalfi Coast hotels: €250–€1,000+ per night
Lake Como boutique hotels: €200–€600+ per night
Sicily accommodation: €100–€350+ per night

These are indicative accommodation ranges rather than fixed prices. Rates can change considerably according to season, exact location, room category and how far in advance you book.

2. Photography & Planning

Photography and planning are often one of the largest parts of a professionally planned elopement budget, but prices can vary considerably depending on coverage, the level of planning involved, the destination and whether the services are booked separately or together.

We combine photography and planning in our own elopement packages, so couples work with the same team from the first stages of planning through to the wedding day.

Our current Photography + Planning packages for most of Italy start at €7,600 for 4 hours, while Full Day Photography + Planning starts at €8,600.

Our Western Italian Alps packages have their own dedicated pricing, with Photography + Planning currently starting from €7,000 for 4 hours and €8,000 for Full Day Photography + Planning.

3. Hair, Makeup & Flowers

Hair, makeup and florals can vary considerably depending on the destination, the supplier you choose and whether travel, trials or additional styling are required.

Bridal hair & makeup: around €400–€900+
Bouquet + boutonnière: around €200–€500+

Premium destination hair and makeup artists can charge €1,000+, particularly when travel, very early starts, trials or extended assistance are involved. More elaborate floral designs, ceremony arrangements and installations can also increase the floral budget considerably.

For an elopement, however, you don’t necessarily need extensive floral decoration. Many couples choose a beautiful bouquet and boutonnière and let the landscape or architecture provide the setting.

4. Ceremony Fees: Symbolic vs Civil

The cost of your ceremony depends enormously on whether you choose a symbolic or legally binding civil ceremony.

Symbolic Ceremony

A symbolic ceremony has no legal or administrative fee in itself. You may be able to exchange vows somewhere accessible for free, or you may choose a private venue or location that charges a fee. If you hire a professional celebrant, this is a separate cost.

As a general guide, a professional celebrant in Italy may cost around €500–€1,000+, depending on the destination, travel and the level of personalisation involved.

Civil Ceremony

There is no useful single price for a civil ceremony in Italy. Fees are set locally and can vary dramatically according to the municipality, ceremony venue, residency or citizenship and sometimes the day and time of the ceremony.

In some towns, the municipal fee may be a few hundred euros. In highly sought-after locations it can run into several thousand euros. For example, civil ceremonies for couples resident abroad in Florence currently start at €2,500 in some municipal venues and can exceed €5,000 in others.

If having a legally binding ceremony in Italy is important to you, we recommend checking the current official fee and requirements for your chosen municipality before building your budget around it.

Paperwork and legal requirements vary depending on your nationality and the municipality where you marry, and may involve additional costs for documents, legalisation, translations or an interpreter. For a full explanation of the legal requirements and paperwork for international couples, see our Ultimate Guide to Eloping in Italy.

5. Travel & Logistics

Travel and transport costs depend heavily on where you choose to elope and how much you want to include in the day. In some destinations you may need very little private transport, while in others drivers, boats or transfers between locations can become a significant part of the budget.

Private transfers and drivers are particularly useful in areas where public transport is limited or where your elopement involves several locations. The final cost will depend on the distance, number of hours, vehicle and destination.

Boats and other private experiences are best considered destination-specific costs rather than standard elopement expenses. On Lake Como, for example, a private boat can cost a few hundred euros for a shorter experience and €1,000+ for longer or more premium charters.

You may also need to budget for airport or station transfers, parking, tolls, ferries, cable cars or other local transport, depending on your plans.

Not every elopement needs complicated logistics. Choosing accommodation close to your ceremony and photography locations can reduce both transport costs and the amount of your day spent travelling.

Cost to elope in Italy

COST TO ELOPE IN ITALY BY REGION

Where you choose to elope can have a significant impact on your overall budget. Accommodation, private venue fees, transport and local logistics vary considerably across Italy, while some supplier costs are relatively similar from one region to another.

The ranges below are useful for understanding how different destinations compare, but they are planning ranges rather than fixed package prices. Your final cost will depend on the type of experience you create, your accommodation, ceremony choice and any private venues or additional experiences you include.

Tuscany Elopement Cost

Couple walking through a Tuscan lane with cypresses on their elopement in Italy

What to budget: €8,000–€16,000+

Tuscany can offer excellent flexibility because you can choose between countryside accommodation, historic towns, natural locations and private estates. An elopement based around an agriturismo and outdoor symbolic ceremony can remain relatively simple, while private villas, exclusive estates and legally binding ceremonies in prestigious municipal venues can increase the budget considerably.

Best for: couples who want rolling countryside, historic towns, relaxed travel and plenty of choice between simple and more elaborate experiences.

Amalfi Coast Elopement Cost

Couple walking through the chiostro of Grand Hotel Convento in Amalfi on their Amalfi Coast elopement

What to budget: €12,000–€22,000+

The Amalfi Coast tends to be one of the more expensive elopement destinations in Italy, particularly during high season. Accommodation, private terraces and venues, boats and transport between the coastal towns can all add considerably to the overall cost.

You don’t necessarily need a private venue, however. A symbolic ceremony in a beautiful public location combined with carefully chosen accommodation and simpler logistics can keep the experience considerably more cost-balanced.

Best for: couples who want dramatic coastal scenery, Mediterranean towns, boat experiences and beautiful boutique hotels.

The Amalfi Coast offers some truly spectacular settings; however, it’s essential that your photographer and planner know how to navigate the crowds. For this reason, we most often recommend eloping in the Amalfi Coast during the off-season, when you can truly enjoy your day to the fullest.

Lake Como Elopement Cost

couple kissing with beautiful views of Lake Como in the background on their elopement on Lake Como

What to budget: €12,000–€26,000+

Lake Como can vary enormously in price. An elopement based around one of the lake towns with a symbolic ceremony and private boat is very different financially from an experience involving exclusive access to a historic villa or private lakeside venue.

Private boats can add several hundred euros or more depending on the boat and duration, while exclusive villas can add several thousand euros before accommodation and other suppliers are considered.

Best for: couples who want lake scenery, elegant towns, private boat experiences and the option of spectacular historic villas.

Lake Como offers some of the most exquisite villas in Italy and is an ideal choice for couples dreaming of a refined, luxurious elopement. Take a look at Sadie & Nale’s elopement at Villa Pizzo to see what a Lake Como elopement can look like:

Venice Elopement Cost

Couple having an intimate moment on a Venice bridge with Ponte dei Sospiri in the background on their elopement in Venice

What to budget: €10,000–€20,000+

Venice can work across quite different budgets depending on where you stay and what you include. Accommodation around the most sought-after areas and private water taxis, boats, palazzos or exclusive terraces can increase costs, while a symbolic sunrise ceremony and a simpler experience through the quieter parts of the city can require very little venue infrastructure.

Best for: couples drawn to historic architecture, quiet sunrise streets and canals, atmospheric portraits and the option of incorporating a private boat or Venetian palazzo.

Venice is without a doubt one of our favourite destinations for an elopement in Italy. While it can be a busy city, as local planners and photographers we know how to step away from the crowds and create unforgettable experiences in one of Italy’s most iconic and romantic cities.

Rome Elopement Cost

Couple having an intimate moment in front of ancient Roman ruins, on their elopement in Rome

What to budget: €10,000–€18,000+

Rome offers considerable flexibility. A symbolic sunrise elopement using the city itself as the backdrop can remain relatively simple, while private venues, legally binding ceremonies and dedicated transport between locations can increase the overall budget.

Best for: couples who want art, history, architecture and an energetic city experience rather than a countryside or coastal setting.

There truly is no other city like Rome, and eloping here feels like a dream. That said, it’s Italy’s largest city, and navigating its busy streets requires an experienced team who knows the city to ensure a smooth, stress-free day. Take a look at this family elopement in Rome — one of the sweetest stories we’ve had the pleasure to document:

Sicily Elopement Cost

Couple kissing at sunset with Taormina in the background on their elopement in Sicily

What to budget: €8,000–€15,000+

Sicily can offer particularly good flexibility for an experience-led elopement, with beautiful accommodation and an enormous variety of natural and historic settings. Costs can increase when you add private venues, longer transfers across the island or more elaborate multi-day experiences, but a beautiful symbolic elopement does not necessarily require any of these.

Best for: couples who love wild coastlines, Baroque towns, dramatic landscapes, food and a slower, less conventional Italian experience.

Sicily is truly a hidden gem in our country. It offers incredible landscapes, history, cuisine and cities. Perfect if you want to steer away from Italy’s busiest destinations, if you decided to elope in Sicily you’d not be disappointed. Have a look at Julie & Aric’s sunrise elopement in Taormina:

Cinque Terre Elopement Cost

View of Manarola at sunrise shot during an elopement in Cinque Terre

What to budget: €9,000–€18,000+

Cinque Terre doesn’t necessarily require expensive private venues, but its geography can make logistics more important. Limited road access, trains, boats, accommodation availability and the vertical nature of the villages all influence how an elopement day can be planned.

Choosing a symbolic ceremony and keeping the experience geographically simple can help keep costs balanced, while private terraces, boats and more complex logistics will increase the budget.

Best for: couples who want colourful villages, dramatic coastline, vineyards, walking and a more rustic seaside atmosphere.

BUDGET ITALY ELOPEMENT: HOW TO ELOPE TO ITALY ON A BUDGET

Planning an elopement in Italy doesn’t necessarily mean spending €15,000 or €20,000. As we’ve seen above, a beautiful elopement can cost well below €8,000, particularly if you plan much of it yourselves and keep the experience simple.

The key is deciding which parts of the experience matter most to you. You don’t need a private villa, extensive florals or a long list of suppliers simply because you’re getting married in Italy. For many couples, investing in a few important elements and letting the destination itself provide the setting creates an experience that feels far more personal.

Choose a symbolic ceremony

A symbolic ceremony can give you much more flexibility over where and how you exchange your vows, without the municipal fees and additional administration involved in a legally binding ceremony in Italy. You can still make the ceremony completely personal and meaningful to you.

If you’re considering this option, our guide to symbolic elopement ceremonies in Italy has plenty of ideas for creating a ceremony that feels personal to the two of you.

Let Italy be your venue

One of the biggest ways to control your budget is simply not hiring a private wedding venue. Italy already gives you mountains, lakes, coastlines, historic streets and countryside to work with.

Depending on the location and local regulations, choosing an accessible outdoor or public setting can dramatically reduce venue costs while creating an experience that feels much more connected to the destination.

Keep the logistics simple

Moving between several locations can mean additional drivers, transfers, boats and travel time. Choosing accommodation and locations that work well together can make the day simpler, more relaxed and less expensive.

It also means spending more of your elopement actually experiencing Italy rather than sitting in a car.

If your plans depend on specific suppliers, boats, venues or experiences, booking well in advance can also give you considerably more choice, particularly in popular destinations and during busy periods.

Consider travelling outside peak season

Travelling outside the busiest periods can sometimes reduce accommodation costs and make availability easier, particularly in highly seasonal destinations.

But there is no single cheapest month for all of Italy. Seasonality varies enormously between the mountains, lakes, cities and coastal regions, so choosing the right time of year should be based on both your destination and the experience you want.

Keep flowers intentional

You don’t need extensive floral installations for an elopement. A beautiful bouquet and boutonnière may be enough, particularly when you’re exchanging vows somewhere where the landscape or architecture is already doing most of the work.

Spend on what actually matters to you

An elopement gives you the freedom to spend differently from a traditional wedding. Rather than adding things because you feel you should, put your budget towards the parts of the experience you will genuinely remember.

That might mean photography, beautiful accommodation, an incredible dinner, a boat trip, an activity you love or simply having more time together. Your priorities don’t have to look like anyone else’s wedding.

Love the mountains? Our Western Italian Alps elopement packages start lower than our standard pricing for the rest of Italy, with Photography + Planning currently starting from €7,000. For couples who love mountains, alpine lakes and adventurous experiences, this can be an incredible alternative to some of Italy's more expensive destinations. Cheapest Months to Elope in Italy

There is no single cheapest month to elope in Italy. Prices and availability vary considerably depending on the destination.

In many popular lake, coastal and countryside destinations, travelling outside the busiest wedding and tourism periods can mean lower accommodation prices, better supplier availability and fewer crowds. Spring and autumn can therefore offer excellent value, but the best months depend on the region.

Mountain destinations follow a different seasonal pattern, while cities such as Rome and Venice have their own peaks throughout the year.

Rather than choosing a month based on price alone, consider the destination, weather, accessibility and the type of experience you want.

All-Inclusive Elopement Packages in Italy

For couples who don’t want to organise all the individual elements themselves, an all-inclusive elopement package can bring photography, planning and the main suppliers together into one service.

Our Full Day All-Inclusive package for most of Italy currently starts at €9,800 and includes photography and planning together with services such as hair and makeup, florals and ceremony support.

Our Western Italian Alps packages have their own dedicated pricing, which is explained separately above.

Cost of a Photographer & Planner

Photography and planning are often closely connected when you’re organising an elopement abroad. An experienced elopement photographer and planner can help you understand what is realistically possible, choose locations that work well together, build a relaxed timeline and navigate the practicalities of creating an elopement experience in Italy.

The cost will depend on the amount of photography coverage, the level of planning involved and the destination. Our Photography + Planning packages for most of Italy currently start at €7,600, while our Western Italian Alps packages have their own dedicated pricing, explained above.

Choose a photographer who specialises in elopements, not simply weddings. The right experience and local knowledge can make an enormous difference.

FAQs ABOUT ITALY ELOPEMENT COSTS

Eloping in Italy doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive. A simple, mostly self-planned elopement can cost well below €8,000, while €9,000–€18,000+ is a useful planning range for a professionally planned, experience-led elopement.

Celebrations involving private venues, luxury accommodation, multi-day experiences or more complex logistics can easily reach €18,000–€30,000+.

The final cost depends much more on what you choose to include, where in Italy you elope and the type of experience you want than on the fact that it is an elopement.

There is no single cost for a civil ceremony in Italy. Fees vary considerably depending on the municipality, authorised venue, residency or citizenship requirements, day of the week and sometimes the time of the ceremony.

A simple town-hall ceremony may cost hundreds of euros, while prestigious authorised venues in some Italian cities can cost several thousand euros. There may also be additional costs for paperwork, translations or an interpreter depending on your circumstances.

If keeping costs and logistics simple is a priority, many international couples choose to complete the legal marriage at home and have a symbolic ceremony in Italy instead.

Elopement photography prices in Italy vary considerably depending on the photographer’s experience, coverage, destination, travel requirements and whether planning support is included.

Our own services combine elopement photography with full planning support. For most of Italy, our Photography + Planning packages currently start at €7,600, while our Western Italian Alps packages have their own dedicated pricing, starting from €7,000.

When comparing photographers, check carefully what is included, as photography-only coverage and a combined photography and planning service are very different services.

There isn’t one single cheapest region to elope in Italy. Costs depend on the exact location, season, accommodation, transport and whether you need a private venue.

Choosing less touristy locations, avoiding expensive private venues and keeping logistics simple can often make a much bigger difference than choosing one Italian region over another.

If you love the mountains, our Western Italian Alps packages also have separate, dedicated pricing than our standard packages for the rest of Italy.

There is no fixed minimum cost for a two-person elopement in Italy. If you plan most of the experience yourselves and keep things simple, it is entirely possible to spend well below €8,000.

For a professionally planned, experience-led elopement, €9,000–€18,000+ is a useful planning range. Private venues, luxury accommodation, multi-day experiences or more elaborate logistics can take the overall budget to €18,000–€30,000+.

Travelling as just the two of you gives you enormous flexibility over where you spend and what you choose to prioritise.

A symbolic ceremony can often be simpler and more cost-effective than a civil ceremony in Italy, particularly if you choose a free or low-cost location.

A symbolic ceremony does not involve Italian municipal marriage fees or the legal paperwork required for a civil marriage, and it usually gives you much more flexibility over where, when and how you exchange your vows.

However, symbolic does not necessarily mean free: private venues and some locations may still charge an access or ceremony fee, and you may also choose to hire a celebrant.

There is no single cheapest time of year to elope in Italy because seasonality varies considerably between the mountains, lakes, cities, countryside and coastal regions.

In many popular destinations, travelling outside the busiest wedding and tourism periods can mean lower accommodation prices, better supplier availability and fewer crowds. However, the best-value months depend on the particular destination.

When choosing your date, consider weather, accessibility, crowds and the experience you want, rather than price alone.
